WHAT IS VA DISABILITY COMPENSATION?

VA disability compensation offers a tax-free payment monthly to Veterans who became sick or were injured while serving and to Veterans whose active military service made an existing condition worse.

WHAT IS THE MONTHLY PAYMENT AMOUNT FOR A DISABLED VETERAN?

Disability compensation rates differ greatly. VA monthly compensation rates can vary from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Many factors are considered including a veterans disability rating, marital status and number of dependent children and parents.

WHAT IS A VA DISABILITY RATING?

A veteran is a person who served in the active military, who was released from service, but not dishonorably discharged. A disabled veteran is personnel who suffered an injury or disease or had a condition aggravated by their service that caused a disability. The VA makes a determination about the severity of your disability based on the evidence you submit as part of your claim, or that the VA obtains from your military records. VA rates a disability from 0% to 100% in 10% increments. Disabled veterans are assigned a disability rating based on the severity of their service-connected condition.

WHAT IS A VA COMBINED DISABILITY RATING?

If you have multiple disability ratings, the VA uses calculators to determine your combined VA disability rating. Calculating your combined total disability rating involves more than an add up of your individual ratings. This is why your combined rating may be different from the sum of your individual ratings. If a veteran has more than one disability, the "whole theory person" method is used by the VA to decide a veteran's combined select disability rating. This method is used so the total VA disability rating stays at a percentage of 100 or below. A person can't be more than 100 percent disabled. If veterans have more than one disability rating, the ratings are put in order from highest to lowest percentage. Then through a series of calculation, a combined disability rating is assigned.

HOW THE VA DISABILITY CALCULATOR WORKS

If you’ve already filed a VA disability claim and have an assigned rating, you can use our VA Disability Calculator to calculate your estimated standard VA monthly monetary compensation rate. The calculator takes little time and is easy to use. To use our disability calculator, start by selecting the percentage of your disability. Then you need to answer a few simple questions about your marital status, how many dependent children you have and whether you have any dependent parents. Plug this information into the VA disability calculator and quickly see your monthly payment amount calculated.

MOST COMMON VETERAN DISABILITIES

Since 1990, the population of veterans has declined while the percentage of disabled veterans has seen an increase. In 2019, the percentage of veterans receiving compensation payments for a disability was almost 20% (around 5 million). The most common disabilities among veterans are Tinnitus (noise or ringing in the ears), hearing loss, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), scarring, limitation of knee flexibility, neck and lower back strains, paralysis, ankle and/or arm motion limitation, and migraine headaches.

OTHER FACTORS THAT CAN AFFECT YOUR DISABILITY RATING

Additionally, a veterans monthly compensation can be affected and increased due to other factors in the VA rating. Some of these circumstances include: a disability affecting both arms and/or both legs (the Bilateral Factor), and a total disability based on individual unemployability (TDIU). These factors would add additional compensation to the total monthly benefit.
